The goal is simple: reduce stress, avoid sudden chemistry swings, and give new livestock the best possible transition into your system.
Temperature acclimate
Float sealed bags briefly to reduce temperature differences. Avoid leaving livestock in shipping water longer than necessary.
Match the method to the animal
Fish, corals, and invertebrates can have different acclimation needs. Sensitive invertebrates may benefit from gradual salinity adjustment; shipped fish often benefit from minimizing time in opened shipping water.
Use quarantine when possible
A dedicated observation/quarantine process can protect the display aquarium and lets you evaluate feeding, behavior, and pests before introduction.
Start coral lighting conservatively
New corals can experience a very different spectrum and intensity than they had previously. Begin lower and acclimate upward rather than immediately placing a coral at maximum intensity.
